Sling Pilot Academy's Story

Sling Pilot Academy is a flight training school based in Torrance, CA, certifying students with Private, Commercial, and Instrument Ratings in modern, fun airplanes – the Sling!

There is a severe worldwide pilot shortage, and airlines struggle to fill the vacancies with experienced, well-trained, and certified pilots. This has been a fantastic opportunity for Sling and over the past two years, when most businesses struggled with the restrictions of the pandemic, Sling saw the company grow exponentially.

The rapid increase in inquiries from new students meant that all communications channels were opened up – phone, fax, website, and social media – as every prospective pilot wanted to communicate in their own way, and Sling is very open to that.

The problem Sling needed to overcome was their existing phone system was installed solely in the main office suites and was physical SIP handsets only, leaving other areas of the business relying on mobile phones which were not connected to the company-wide phone system.

As well as the office suites at the Torrance Airport, Sling also has on-site training facilities and engineering hubs located in hangars around the airport. With a team of over 40 people, Sling needed a nimble and Cloud Based communications solution to replace their legacy phone system.

Why Sling Chose 2talk

Sling was in the market for an innovative, scalable, hosted VoIP solution to meet their immediate and long-term needs. They needed a cost-effective solution that could be implemented without technical support engineers and could be done during business hours. They were also looking for a VoIP service provider focused on the SMB market, offering telephone and web-based support.

Matt Liknaitzky, Sling’s Co-CEO, saw that 2talk offered a hosted VoIP solution that included low-cost VoIP calling and a Cloud PBX and could be implemented on a mix of IP-based handsets as well as 2talk’s softphone. And 2talk was also able to supply handsets delivered directly to the site.

The essential features that Sling wanted from 2talk were:

· Low-touch device provisioning for their Yealink IP handsets;
·Softphones for both iPhone and Android smartphones;
· Advanced Cloud PBX features that could be managed online through a single user interface;
· Reception Console;
·Auto Attendant;
· Call Queuing;
· Call Recording;
· New local phone numbers and extensions.

In addition to the essential features above, Sling saw the value in the 2talk Cloud PBX solution, and the monthly Calling Plan.

Implementing 2talk's Hosted VoIP Solution at Sling

From start to finish, the implementation of the new phone system was done in a single afternoon. Once Sling’s account with 2talk was activated, the MAC addresses for the newly purchased Yealink handsets were uploaded to the Device Provisioning tool. The handsets were matched to a phone number and were essentially ready to make and receive calls.

Line keys for the individual features settings for each phone were all configured inside the 2talk Cloud PBX, giving each user access to just the features they needed for their work function.

The hangars had a mix of Yealink handsets with engineers, trainers, and pilots all installing the 2talk softphone on their mobile phones and using the Simultaneous Ring to ensure they could take a call from wherever they were at the airport.
