Cloud Unified Communications and VoIP Calling
The pandemic changed everything – from how we shop and socialize to how we work and communicate. To say the last year has been challenging would be an understatement, but it was important to recognize the silver lining in 2020.
For one, the shift to remote work has allowed many to redefine their priorities and embrace a more flexible schedule. In fact, large corporations like Microsoft and Google have announced their employees will have the option to continue to telecommute post-pandemic. This is significant and marks a massive change in the future of work and the hybrid workforce’s inception.
If you are one of the millions still working from home, the world could indeed be your oyster. One of the top advantages of remote work is the chance to travel and do your job from anywhere – whether that’s your home office or a beachside resort.
As vaccine distribution efforts continue, many are looking to the future. Now we’re thinking about where they will go once we can finally get back to traveling. For those whose jobs will remain remote, it can be both exciting and overwhelming to think about hitting the road and exploring the world – without letting your work suffer.
The good news is that many solutions are designed to support the remote workforce. They also help motivate a new generation of happier, more balanced workers. But where do you start? Below you will find tips for working while you travel – whether that’s a much-needed extended vacation or a complete change in lifestyle (van life, anyone?) If you have anything to add, we’d love to hear it!
The first thing to consider when working while you travel is your internet connection. Sure, it sounds magical to take your laptop to a mountaintop somewhere deep in the Rockies. But how will the service be? Do your research, talk to your phone plan provider, and make sure you know what your internet access will be like before taking off. Depending on your profession, dependable wi-fi speed for both uploads and downloads is a must and is not something to play by ear.
Staying connected to coworkers and colleagues is a significant challenge when working while you travel. Digital fatigue was a real problem in 2020 as we all adjusted to working from home and a schedule jam-packed with virtual meetings and happy hours. When traveling while working, ensure you are prepared for online meetings and use a platform like 2talk that understands your needs. It may also be a good idea to consider a VoIP plan, especially if you are a small business with plans to keep remote work as an option.
If you are working while traveling between time zones, pay attention and develop a system that works for you. For some, this could be an excellent opportunity to be productive when the rest of your team is sleeping. Double-check that all your calendar reminders are in the correct time zone, and don’t be that guy (or girl) who shows up at the meeting an hour late because of a time zone mishap!
Finally, remember to enjoy where you are and set boundaries for work. Adopting an “always-on” attitude can be easy, but the beauty of working remotely is the freedom and flexibility it provides.
